Projects: Central Avenue

  • This project would upgrade central Avenue by making use of the extra-wide shoulders to put in a new sidewalk on the north side of the road, and a bike lane on the south side of the road (except near Eliot Street, where Central Ave. is too narrow).
  • The bike lane would be on the same side of the road as Turner's Pond, making it a family-friendly route to a popular park and to the Glover Elementary School.
  • Design includes traffic-calming features like curbing to reduce auto speeds when entering side streets.
  • The design work for this project is stalled at the 25% level.  Additional funds are needed to complete the engineering work.
  • The state has already put aside $1.8m for construction costs, but the project cannot move forward until the engineering design work is completed.  The DPW has recently lost one staff position, which puts this project at risk.  Additional design work is estimated at about $175k.
